The Lantern on the Misty Road (Japan)
Long ago, in a quiet mountain village in Japan, travelers often crossed a lonely road that wound through dense cedar forests. The path was safe during the day, but after sunset, thick mist rolled down from the hills, hiding everything beyond a few steps.
One autumn evening, a merchant named Hiroshi was returning home after selling silk in a neighboring town. The sun had already disappeared behind the mountains, and darkness settled over the forest. Carrying a small lantern, he hurried along the road, hoping to reach home before midnight.
As the fog thickened, Hiroshi noticed another lantern glowing ahead. Relieved to see another traveler, he called out, but no answer came. The lantern continued moving silently through the mist. Believing the stranger knew the way, Hiroshi followed.
For nearly an hour, the mysterious light floated ahead. Whenever Hiroshi tried to catch up, it drifted farther away. The road became unfamiliar. Tall trees surrounded him on every side, and he realized he had wandered far from the village path.
Suddenly, the lantern stopped. A pale woman dressed in white appeared beneath it. Her long black hair covered much of her face. She slowly turned toward Hiroshi.
"Why do you follow me?" she whispered.
Hiroshi felt cold fear spread through his body. He tried to speak, but no words came out.
The woman pointed toward a steep cliff hidden behind the fog. Another step and Hiroshi would have fallen into the darkness below.
"I have guided many travelers," she said softly. "Some listened. Some did not."
Then the lantern flickered and vanished. The woman disappeared with it.
Shaken, Hiroshi carefully made his way back to the road and eventually reached home. The next morning, he told the villagers what had happened.
An elderly monk listened quietly before speaking.
"Many years ago, a young woman lost her life near that cliff while searching for her husband during a storm. Since then, her spirit has wandered the mountains."
Some believed she was a ghost. Others thought she was a guardian spirit protecting travelers from danger.
Years passed, and many villagers reported seeing the same floating lantern. Every person who followed it safely avoided accidents in the mountains.
To this day, local legends tell of the silent woman in white who appears when fog covers the forest. Travelers who see her lantern are advised not to fear it. The mysterious ghost is said to guide lost souls away from danger and back toward safety.
